Nanxiong Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Nanxiong Basin. The Nanxiong bed erected by Feng Jinglan stands for the red beds on the Danxia bed in the Nanxiong basin of north Guangdong, which was assigned to the Neogene. In 1969 the Central South Institute of Geology under the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources called it the Nanxiong Formation. In 1981 Zhang Xianqiu divided the Nanxiong Formation into four members: the Dafeng, Zhutian, Zhenshui and Pingling members, and assigned it to Late Cretaceous. In 1993 the Guangdong Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources called it the Nanxiong Group and upgraded to members mentioned above into formations, i.e. the Dafeng Fm, Zhutian Fm, and Zhenshui Fm (including the Pingling member).

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Dafeng Formation lies unconformably over the underlying strata.
Upper contact
The conformable top is bounded by the appearance of red mudstone at the base of the Shanghui Fm in the type section of the Zhenshui Fm (uppermost Nanxiong Gr). But neaby, the Danxia Fm (red sandstones) overlie the Nanxiong Gr.
